What Are Big Baits?

Go big or go home - and big lures catch big fish. These two sayings carry a great deal of truth. The idea that a larger lure leads to larger fish is one that will have crossed every angler's mind at some point. And it holds up. Many trophy fish have been landed on extra-large lures while lure fishing.

It may take a little courage and confidence at first to commit to a noticeably large bait. Fellow anglers can be quick with their remarks, and a few raised eyebrows are almost guaranteed when you turn up at the water with a new selection of big bait lures. At that point, you put your head down and fish on - until the first heavy take. Every big bait sceptic will come around instantly once you have your first metre fish in the landing net.

What Should I Look for with Big Baits?

Big baits, meaning large lures for lure fishing, naturally require the right tackle to match. The rod, line and reel all need to be suited to the size and weight involved. Leader material, snaps and swivels also need careful consideration. For anyone unfamiliar with big bait leaders and the individual steps involved in tying your own, we have a useful article on this in our blog: Tying Your Own Leaders.

Experienced big bait anglers will find a wide range of accessories for large lures here at Pike & Perch - snaps, fluorocarbon, hooks and tools. You will also find a selection of the most capable big bait rods from the best brands in the scene.

Big Baits for Predators

Pike & Perch brings you the most effective big baits for catching extra-large predators. XXL lures originally came out of the USA, but today predator anglers worldwide carry one or two seriously large baits in their lure box. We stock high-quality big baits in the best colours. The largest models weigh up to 300 g and can measure up to 35 cm in length.

Looking for big baits for salt water? Alongside large lures for wels catfish, pike and large zander, we also carry salt water big baits for targeting large cod, haddock, ling and other marine predators. All wels catfish anglers rate top brands such as Fox Rage, Savage Gear and Westin very highly. Pike anglers will find an even larger selection of branded big baits in the shop.

Browse the range and pick up your new big baits here. You can be completely confident you are fishing with the best of the best. The hooks and connectors on every big bait in our range deliver on their promise, and the lures themselves are made from durable materials. The action in the water is impeccable and highly effective. If your goal is catching large pike, you have come to the right place.

Target Smaller Predators Too

A tip from us: when fishing big baits, do not limit yourself to pike and wels catfish. If your spot holds a lot of smaller and medium-sized predators, a big bait lets you select specifically for the larger specimens. Record-sized zander and perch, as well as large wild trout, will take large lures with confidence.

Large Lures Through Modern Production Techniques

Classic lures for lure fishing - spinners and spoons, for example - eventually reach a ceiling when it comes to size. An oversized spinner rarely makes sense and seldom produces results. A lifelike lure that accurately represents a baitfish at its natural size is, by contrast, a very good idea. Modern production techniques and printing processes have, among other things, made it possible for 4D fish to find their way into the water. Pike cannot get enough of them and fall for the baitfish imitations time and again.

Big Bait Fishing Techniques

Big bait anglers use a range of techniques to present large lures effectively. The boundaries between techniques and applications are not fixed and often overlap. As a general guide, big baits are fished in the following ways:

Trolling: big baits are very well suited to trolling from a boat.

Sea fishing: charter fishing, wreck trips, trolling, fjord fishing, big game - there are many applications for big baits in salt water.

Jigging: with the right tackle, you can present large baits precisely to the biggest predators in the water.

Finesse XXL: an insider tip. Use the largest baits in a finesse style to outwit big predators even in the most difficult conditions - for example on a drop shot rig.

We are happy to advise you on the best technique and the most effective big baits for your favourite spot. Give big baits a chance and try your luck this season with a lure of 20+ cm. When your new personal best of the season is on the bank, we will be celebrating with you - welcome to the big bait angler's club.

Frequently asked questions

The best setup for big baits is a shallow rig. It holds the lure securely and allows the hooks to find their purchase in a predator's mouth properly.
Any lure from 20 cm upwards can be considered a big bait.
Big baits are ideally suited for targeting large pike. Wels catfish can of course also be fooled with these lures.
To cast heavy weights without fatigue, look for a rod with a long handle and a length of over 2.40 m. The casting weight should be well above 100 g and matched to the weight and resistance of the lure.
Large lures are a good choice on open coastal waters and other venues with a healthy population of large baitfish. Here they are mainly used for open-water fishing. That said, you can also use them selectively on smaller waters to target specimen pike.
