Fishing with Spoons

Fishing with spoons has its origins in the Far East. It took longer for spoons to reach Europe compared with new lures arriving from America. These Asian lures have since become a genuine phenomenon and can be found at 99% of all trout lakes. What is the secret? How do you fish successfully with spoons?

The Pike & Perch team shares a few important tips on fishing with spoons here. You will find the most effective spoons along with recommendations drawn from real experience on the bank.

Spoons for Trout

The best spoon anglers had in many ways already prepared themselves well for this technique. At every trout lake you would spot a few real specialists whose complicated rigs and skilled presentation made every other angler look ordinary. Those who had mastered float beads, weightless lures, controller floats and other specialist components took quickly to spoon fishing. These days many trout anglers fish exclusively with spoons.

Rigs built around sinking sbirolinos were, and still are, the preserve of a few adventurous trout lake regulars. If you enjoyed experimenting with unusual trout rigs back then and have a good stock of sbirolinos and other components, fishing with spoons was made for you.

Where Can You Fish with Spoons?

There are no boundaries when it comes to spoon fishing. Spoons work on rivers and streams, on lakes, and even in the sea - for sea trout, for example. They are used most typically at trout lakes or on small, narrow rivers. The single hooks on spoons place them in a grey area where a lure ban applies at a particular water, since in many cases such bans refer only to lures fitted with treble hooks. The large trout in trout lakes across the country have seen just about every lure going. Even so, experienced and wary fish fall for the new spoons time and again. What is the key to their success?

A spoon closely resembles an insect landing on the water surface. The sound it makes on entry is fundamentally different from that of, say, a balsa wood plug or a heavy metal spinner. Trout do not bolt when a spoon is cast out. On the contrary, the biggest fish often swim straight towards the spoon without hesitation.

How Do Spoons Fit In?

Spoons belong to the category of metal lures. At the same time they are true ultralight lures. They are available in weights from around 1 g and lighter right through to heavier 5 g models. Designs range from natural to vivid and colourful. If you want to present your spoons at their best, a good ultralight rod is essential. Your reel and line should naturally match - light and finesse-oriented.

Practical Spoon Tips for Anglers

Our current collection consists largely of spoons that are attached directly to the end of the line. In the near future you can also expect the new through-running spoon generation in the same place. As with any lure, it is always a great advantage to use a good leader in front of the spoon.

Many practical tips for spoon fishing can be explained in just a few words. Avoid the typical beginner mistakes and you will quickly land your first spoon-caught trout on the lake or river.

Choosing the Right Rod

With an ordinary light rod you will not really present your spoons to their full potential. Only with a good ultralight rod can you, A - cast the spoons far enough, and B - land bigger fish without losing too many. Good ultralight rods have a particular action that allows even the smallest lures to be cast accurately and at distance.

When a sizeable fish takes, the other side of an ultralight rod reveals itself. It offers a strong backbone and plenty of power in reserve. With a careful touch, even the most substantial predator can be guided safely towards the landing net. In short: always choose a good UL rod and matching tackle when fishing with spoons.

Action and Sound

As mentioned above, all spoons produce a distinctive sound when they hit the water surface. Trout in particular are drawn magnetically to a spoon the moment it lands. After the cast the spoon sinks, making a kind of fluttering movement as it does so. Make use of the spoon's own action and give the lure plenty of time to sink. Pauses during the retrieve also allow the spoon to sink temptingly.

The many different spoons from the various brands each have their own specific action in the water.

Colour Choice with Spoons

Every spoon is available in a wide range of colour designs. It is easy to lose track and beginners often find themselves unsure which spoons to choose. A tip from experienced spoon anglers: always try a natural, understated design first. The less conspicuous colour tones often outperform the flashier ones. If the subtler colours are not producing, switch to the bold, bright options.

Retrieve and Tactics

Some spoons have an aggressive, fast action. Others produce the best results when retrieved slowly. Pike & Perch has a full set of product information for every spoon so that you can inform yourself thoroughly about all the lure's characteristics before you buy.

If you are unsure which spoon is the best choice for a particular situation, do not hesitate to contact our customer service team. We are always happy to advise on fishing with spoons.

A very effective tactic when spoon fishing is to work the deeper water layers first, then fish progressively higher in the water column. With each cast you start retrieving a little earlier than before. This is how you catch the big trout holding deep. If the spoon passes over the heads of the largest fish right from the start, you will often spook the biggest predators at the spot. Remember: fish spoons tactically in the deep water first, then work your way up.

Practical Spoon Tips at a Glance

Use a good leader in front of the spoon

Ultralight rods are a must

Give the spoon time to sink

Favour natural, understated colour designs

Familiarise yourself with the different spoon characteristics

Work the deeper water layers first

The Pike & Perch team has saved one very important practical tip until last, so that it really sticks with you and stays in your mind at your next spoon session on the water. In fact the tip applies to all finesse and UL lure fishing techniques.

Many anglers new to UL and spoon fishing strike far too hard and aggressively when they get a bite. With ultralight fishing you strike with feel. The fine-wire hooks on spoons are razor sharp and penetrate the mouths of predators without any trouble. Too hard a strike can cost you more fish than you would like. Try it - hold back when fishing with spoons. A light flick of the wrist is entirely sufficient. Your ultralight rod and the lures themselves do the real work.

Here you can see how the spoon performs head to head against other lures:

Frequently asked questions

Spoons are metal lures, once known as spoon lures. They attract fish with their strong tumbling action and intense light reflections.
Cast out and let the lure sink as long as you like. You can then simply retrieve the spoon at a steady pace. Varying the speed often triggers a bite.
It is mainly the size and weight. Many dedicated trout spoons also feature a single hook and bold colours.
They are usually made from metal, have an enticing, strongly rolling action and cast enormous distances thanks to their elongated profile.
Salmonids above all. Whether rainbow trout on a trout lake or sea trout in salt water - they simply love spoons. Dedicated pike spoons also do an excellent job.
