Buying Guide: Hybrid Baits

Over the past few years, hybrid lures have stepped well out of the shadows and established themselves as genuine tools for targeting large pike.

Construction and Lure Presentation

Most hybrid lures are built around a hard lure body that moves in a similar fashion to a jerkbait or plug, and the front section reflects that construction. The key difference is that the rear section is made of soft plastic, giving it the qualities of a soft lure. This design offers several advantages: cautious predators are often reluctant to commit to a pure hard lure and will merely nudge it. A soft tail is frequently what triggers the full take. You can also swap the tails as required, which means the lure lasts indefinitely in theory. Swapping tails also lets you combine different colour patterns and respond quickly to changing conditions. Two fundamental variants of hybrid baits can be distinguished:

Jerkbait-Style Hybrid Lures

The first type features a hard body that most closely resembles a jerkbait - cigar-shaped or oval, with no visible action at rest. The soft section on these baits is typically a curly tail grub. This combination has real advantages: lures built this way cast very long distances and are worked in the same way as a jerkbait, meaning you animate them with the rod so that they dart erratically from side to side through the water. Smaller, shorter twitches also produce well with this style. The curly tail grub not only sends out additional pressure waves but also gives the lure a noticeably more erratic, wobbling action.

Plug-Style Hybrid Lures

A second, slightly less common design resembles a swimbait or plug more closely. These lures are typically shaped like a baitfish and feature a matching soft tail that completes the profile. Some models are fitted with a diving lip, making them well suited to trolling as well. When casting, you can simply retrieve them steadily and introduce irregular pauses at intervals - the take most often comes during one of those pauses.

Tackle

In most cases, these lures can be fished on a standard spinning rod, provided it has sufficient casting weight. This is mainly because hybrid baits either have good inherent action or can be presented very effectively with short twitches. A suitably strong reel and line, along with a pike-proof wire trace, are of course absolutely essential when fishing these lures.
