The spoon was invented in the 1930s and has remained largely unchanged ever since. In many lure boxes, it has faded into the background - or gone missing altogether.

Casting spoons have a few clear advantages. Because they have no moving parts apart from the hook, they cast extremely far - you can even skip them into the wind on an underhand cast, reaching distances where other lures become almost unfishable. That makes them excellent lures for bank fishing, but equally strong as trolling lures.

Spoons come into their own in spring when small baitfish are everywhere. In warm water they work well as search lures, letting you cover large areas quickly to find active predators. Even in autumn you can use bigger models to good effect, working them just above the bottom after they have sunk.

Retrieve Styles and Target Species

The action of a spoon is best described as an irregular wobble. Every so often it rolls over, and on the drop it flutters down towards the bottom. Overall, a spoon generates considerable pressure waves and flashes its finish in an enticing way. Two retrieve styles have proved themselves:

Using the reel: After the cast, let the spoon sink to the desired depth and retrieve at a steady pace. Throw in short pauses now and then, letting it tumble towards the bottom - that is usually when the bite comes.

Using the rod: Once the spoon has sunk, wind it back steadily while working the rod in smooth movements towards and away from the lure. This constantly accelerates and slows the lure.

Depending on size, casting spoons suit all predators. Larger models are ideal for pike and wels catfish, while smaller ones catch perch and salmonids superbly.

Yes! Spoons have a retrieve action that is entirely their own. They are virtually indestructible and cast a mile.
Any predator, really. Sea trout and trout anglers swear by these metal lures. Pike and wels catfish anglers also reach for a classic spoon in the right situation.
Most of the time you simply wind them in steadily. Varying the direction and speed of the retrieve now and then can make all the difference on the day.
It comes down to their unique action. The pronounced rolling, flashing flanks generate eye-catching light reflections and pressure waves that tempt fish into a bite.
Yes, you can. There are spoons designed specifically for trolling - mother-of-pearl spoons for sea trout, for example.
