Cod Lures
In Cod we Trust! Big, heavy cod are a very welcome catch on any saltwater fishing trip. We are great fans of cod fishing with light tackle.

Cod Fishing Lures

Cod or codfish? Age makes the difference - though exactly where the line falls varies widely. Ask two anglers when a small cod becomes a full-grown one and you will get at least three answers. To be precise, we are talking about the Atlantic Cod, or Gadus morhua.

What Are Cod?

Although the name Atlantic Cod suggests the fish lives only in the Atlantic, it is in practice found throughout the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and many other areas. In our waters, cod is considered a classic winter fish that you will encounter only very sporadically during the warm summer months. Further north, in colder waters, cod are caught throughout the year.

There is an older generation of anglers among us who used to catch large numbers of heavy cod every winter. Whether from the surf or from a boat, every angler went home with a few good fish at the end of the day. Then the dark side of overfishing made itself felt - the consequences of taking fish without any consideration for reproduction. Both commercial and sport fishermen had to comply with catch limits, closed seasons and minimum sizes. The result was a gradual recovery and improvement of cod stocks. Today we live in an era after the great cod collapse, with a much better understanding of how to treat our favourite sport and table fish responsibly.

Cod as a Table Fish

Cod are outstanding table fish. The white, firm flesh of large specimens is highly prized. Cod fillets from the back, thick steaks, cheeks or a whole fish - there are many ways to prepare and enjoy them. Cod was once the classic fish for fish and chips. The price per kilo has fortunately risen far above what you would expect from a fast-food ingredient. Trawlers targeting frozen fish at sea now focus more on sea bass and pollack.

Modern Cod Fishing

A new generation of modern anglers has taken up the pursuit of cod and found their own approach. Fishing with tackle that gives the fish a sporting chance, using single hooks and quality lures. Catching a cod on a paternoster rig with a 500 g pirk and size 2/0 treble hooks is neither much fun nor much of an achievement. Heavy baitcasters and lines of almost 1 mm in diameter are, in our view, better suited to big-game fishing than to cod fishing.

Cod Lures That Deliver

Modern anglers catch their cod with spinning rods, saltwater reels and the highly effective saltwater lures available in the Pike & Perch online shop. A hot tip worth knowing about are the cod baits from the brand Lieblingsköder. The 20 cm saltwater shads are available in a range of colour designs. Hooks to match should be between size 5/0 and 8/0, with size 7/0 being the optimum.

Cod Fishing Tips

The heaviest cod in our local waters are caught during the cold winter months in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Wrecks at offshore spots are always productive, but can only be reached by boat. That said, large cod can also be caught from the bank.

Choosing the right spot is just as important as timing your session for the right weather and the right tide. Cod fishing is an experience that puts you right in the middle of nature. You feel the wind and the spray on your skin, you taste the salt in the air, and you have to earn every bite.

The best spots for bank fishing are deeper sections of water - in front of harbour walls, for example, or at natural drop-offs. Cod can in theory reach any stretch of coastline, but they favour spots with strong current, shallow reefs and what might look like awkward, tricky ground to an angler. There is plenty of food there and plenty of room to hunt. Underwater weed in the sea is always a productive cod spot too. Where surf anglers reach their limits and pull out heavy tangles of kelp, a spinning rod and a modern rig is where it starts to get really interesting.

Your favourite cod spot might look completely unremarkable on a calm day. As soon as a storm starts to build, those same nondescript stretches can transform into cod hot spots. Only by watching the sea carefully and over a long enough period will you start to see where the good spots really are.

Here you will find an interesting video about cod fishing:
