Buying Guide: Insect Imitations

It may be taking us humans a while to catch on, but fish have known it for ever: insects are packed with protein and sit right at the top of the menu for many species.

The Basics

We've all seen it at the water's edge - huge numbers of insects, especially on warm summer evenings. After heavy rain or during hatches, many of these invertebrates end up on the surface, where fish of all kinds snap them up. Several predators have developed a particular taste for these small creatures: alongside perch and trout, chub are especially enthusiastic takers.

For us predator anglers, that means we can reach for rubber imitations to fool these fish. A number of interesting lures have established themselves in this area:

As well as larvae and beetle imitations, there are also fly imitations - all of which can be fished on a spinning rod.

Rigs

Most insect lures are made from floating soft plastic, so they work perfectly at the surface. Small offset hooks and drop shot hooks fished without weight on ultralight tackle suit them well. A standard jig head, a drop shot rig or a Carolina rig are all equally viable ways to present insect lures effectively.

Work the lure with small twitches from the rod tip - a quivering rod action has also proven effective, though this should be kept subtle.

Frequently asked questions
Insects are an important food source for fish, which makes them highly effective as lures.
Trout and perch respond particularly well, but chub and char are also keen takers.
Like most soft lures, they can be presented in many different ways. They work especially well on a jig head, rubber jig, or drop shot rig.
There's no single answer to that. If you know the insects in your water, imitating them is always a strong starting point.
You can use them year-round. Larvae work well in winter, while aquatic insects of all kinds come into their own in spring and summer.
