Buying Guide for Clip-on Weights

Clip-on weights feature a quick-change mechanism instead of a standard eye. This lets you clip a weight into a split ring, solid ring, swivel eye, stinger spike or hook eye in seconds.

That opens up a wide range of different applications for these weights.

Weighting Down Shallow Rigs

Classic shallow rigs consist of nothing more than an unweighted stainless steel screw fixed into the soft lure and connected to the hook system. Rigged like this, the lure runs quite shallow and is hard to use in deeper water. Rather than switching to screw-in jig heads and re-threading the body every time, you can use a clip-on weight to change the running depth instantly. Simply clip the weight into the eye of the shallow screw, and your lure is ready to run deeper.

Use on the Jika Rig

The jika rig consists of an offset hook connected to the main line via a solid ring or swivel, with a weight also attached to the same solid ring or swivel. To stay flexible here, simply clip a clip-on weight into the solid ring or swivel eye and you can react to changing conditions in seconds.

Use as a Drop Shot Weight

A clip-on weight also works as a drop shot weight. Tie a small solid ring to the end of your leader and clip the weight in. This means you can no longer adjust the distance between the lure and the bottom, but you can change the weight itself very quickly.

Use on the Free Rig

A free rig set-up can also be built with clip-on weights. Instead of threading a standard stick weight onto your leader, thread on a solid ring and clip the weight into that. The result is maximum flexibility when adjusting the weight, even on a free rig.

Weighting Down Hard Lures, Hybrids and Hard Swimbaits

You can also influence the running depth of hard lures such as jerkbaits, crankbaits or hybrid lures. Simply clip the weight into a snap or an eye on the lure and you are ready to go. Some swimbaits now even come with dedicated eyes specifically designed for clipping on these weights.

Clip-on weights are now mostly made from tungsten or other lead-free materials. Tungsten stays very compact thanks to its high density, which means it interferes with the action of your lures as little as possible.

As you can see, heading to the water without clip-on weights would be a mistake.
