Buying Guide for Perch Rods

Perch are among the most popular predators to target, and rightly so - they are remarkably versatile in their feeding behaviour. Whether you are working a small soft lure close to the bottom, fishing hard lures through the mid-water column, or presenting surface lures right on top, catching perch means finding perch. Conditions can change completely from one day to the next, and that is precisely why perch rods need to be highly versatile to keep pace with the daily mood swings of these striped predators. You can of course head to the water with five different rods, but most anglers do not want to - and in truth it is rarely necessary.

The notes below will give you important guidance for choosing your universal perch rod, while also touching on a few specialist options for those who want to build a larger quiver or are looking for rods suited to specific techniques.

The Right Casting Weight

Perch lures come in a huge range of sizes and weights, and which ones you use depends not least on the water you are fishing. That said, you can say in general terms that rods rated between 0.5 and 30 g casting weight will cover almost every perch fishing scenario. With such a rod you can fish everything from a weightless-rigged mini soft plastic right up to a larger shad on a heavy jig head. A range this wide is rarely printed on a single rod; most stated casting weights start at somewhere around 5 to 10 g and go up to roughly 20 or 30 g.

At least where a rod is a spinning rod - that is, a rod designed for a fixed spool reel - you can still cast considerably lighter weights of around 3 g effectively.

If you are only buying a single rod for perch fishing, you will inevitably have to accept a few minor compromises.

The Right Length for Your Perch Rod

The length of your perch rod affects handling and casting distance on one hand, and bite detection and fish-playing ability on the other. If you fish exclusively from the bank and need to reach long distances, a longer rod of around 240 cm is worth considering. Everyone else should look at shorter rods of around two metres, which greatly improves handling, bite detection and control during the fight.

Perch fishing typically demands sensitive bite detection and precise lure presentation. These requirements are best met with short, light rods. Perch also frequently hold very close to the bank, which makes long rods largely unnecessary.

The universal perch rod should therefore be between six and 7.6 ft, or 180 and 225 cm, in length.

If you do a lot of boat or float tube fishing, pay attention to a relatively short handle that should not reach past your elbow.

The Ring Setup

One of the most important characteristics of a perch rod - and one that is frequently underestimated - is the ring configuration.

The size, weight, number and placement of the rings along the blank all influence the rod's behaviour considerably.

The smaller the rings, the less lateral play the line has within them, which directly affects the rod's sensitivity. Small rings are also lighter; the overall weight saving across all rings may be only a few grams, yet it can have a surprisingly large effect on the balance of the rod. This is partly offset by the fact that a greater number of small rings is typically used, which in turn has a positive effect on feedback - the line is kept closer to the blank along its entire length, meaning the rod action is transmitted far more quickly and cleanly than when the line can bow outwards between widely spaced rings.

Too many rings can of course create excess friction and add unnecessary weight, so the golden mean is the best approach here as well. As a rule of thumb, a two-metre perch rod should have between eight and ten small rings, depending on the action.

These should be fitted with inserts made from SIC, zirconium, Alconite or comparable materials. Such inserts ensure excellent heat dissipation and minimal friction, so long casts are achievable and the use of braid is no problem whatsoever.

The Rod Action

The action of a perch rod is a nuanced subject. The recovery speed, sensitivity and bend profile all need specific characteristics if you want the best results from perch fishing.

Overly stiff rods may offer good feedback for soft plastic work, but they frequently lead to frustrating lost fish with larger perch because of those soft mouths. For this reason, rods with a tip action are only partially suited as perch rods.

Far better are rods with a firm, progressive action and high recovery speed that nevertheless behave in a semi-parabolic, forgiving way during the fight to prevent the hooks from tearing free.

These apparently contradictory properties can absolutely be combined in the era of modern carbon fibre materials. There are now featherlight blanks with a fast taper that feel wonderfully direct during lure presentation and bite detection, yet work right down into the handle under load and thus bring even large, hard-fighting perch safely to the landing net.

The Reel Seat of the Perch Rod

The reel seat must, first and foremost, hold a standard perch fishing reel securely. But that alone is not enough.

Ideally, the reel seat on your perch rod allows direct contact with the blank to optimise bite detection. Whether this is achieved through a short foregrip or an exposed blank section between the two grip sections makes little difference in practice.

What you should avoid is a thick, bulky duplon or cork grip that eliminates all contact with the blank. Depending on how you hold your rod, this point deserves careful consideration.

Specialist Rods for Perch Fishing

A few specialist options for perch fishing are worth a brief mention here.

Crankbait Rod

If you fish crankbaits frequently or exclusively, you do not need the kind of rod described above. Here the focus should be on a very progressive, through-action rod that absorbs the vibrations of crankbaits and spinnerbaits so they do not transmit uncomfortably into your arm. Fish also stay hooked far more reliably on a softer rod.

Drop Shot Rod

You can use a universal perch rod for drop shotting to a certain degree, but dedicated drop shot rods for perch fishing have a considerably softer tip. This makes it easier to hold the rig in one spot and present the lure without constantly and unintentionally moving the weight. These rods often feature a Solid Tip - a rod tip made from solid carbon fibre.

Hardbait Rod

If you fish almost exclusively with plugs and other hard lures for perch, look for a rod that leans towards a regular action - firm but very even throughout. Presenting hard lures is significantly easier with such a rod than with one that is overly tip-heavy. The more progressive bend curve also reduces the risk of losing fish here too.

If you are looking for the best perch rod, Johannes Dietel - the perch specialist himself - may have some advice for you in this video:
