Action Craw in the Ideal Perch Size

The Smokin' Dad from NOIKE Japan is what's known as an Action Craw. What sets it apart from a No-Action Craw is that its claws have lively movement both on the retrieve and during the fall - not just when actively worked. On the Smokin' Dad, the two claws are shaped like small paddle tails. This 'Double-Tail' design generates plenty of underwater pressure waves. The claws move in an oscillating, opposing motion, creating a pendulum action as the craw sinks. NOIKE founder Mitsushiro Takeuchi calls this movement pattern the 'Flutter Kick Action'.

The 3-inch version of the Smokin' Dad is not a dedicated big perch bait. Mid-sized fish are just as happy to take this crayfish imitation. The bait features a dedicated Hook Slot Design: a channel is moulded into both the belly and the back to accommodate the hook point, so you can fish the craw weedless straight through weed without needing to bury the hook point into the body.

How to Fish It

The Smokin' Dad works on all classic craw rigs - bottom-oriented setups such as the Texas rig, Carolina rig, Jika rig and Chebu. Where it really comes into its own, though, is on the Free-Rig, where those two pendulum claws produce a particularly pronounced fall phase. In the US, Action Craws are also popular as trailer baits on chatterbaits and swimjigs. The Smokin' Dad is a genuine addition to any craw arsenal and a highly practical complement to the many No-Action Craws that carry relatively little built-in action.
