A Versatile Baitcaster Built to Last

The Savage Gear SG6 BC LH is the entry-level baitcaster in the Savage Gear range - and it punches well above that billing. The aluminium construction gives you a frame that is both rigid and light, and Savage Gear designed the entire reel from the ground up rather than adapting an existing platform. The result is a practical, well-finished baitcaster that feels right in the hand. On the larger model, the centrifugal brake is adjustable directly from the outside. The 100 size opts for a smooth side plate for better feel, but it opens quickly and easily when you need to adjust the cast control. The spool tension knob is secured against loss, and the drag features a discreet clicker that lets you know during the fight when a strong predator is pulling line. The aluminium handle has been milled out to save weight - which also gives it a clean, purposeful look. At just 180 g for the smaller model and 192 g for the larger, both reels are genuine lightweights without any compromise to structural integrity. Maximum drag on both sizes is 6 kg - very respectable for reels of this class. The gearing runs smoothly and makes a day's fishing that much more enjoyable. To cover as wide a range of techniques as possible, both sizes are available in two gear ratios - 6.6:1 and 8.1:1 - so every predator angler can find the right match for their style. For lubrication, Savage Gear uses two proprietary products, Dura Oil and Dura Grease, both formulated to perform at very high and very low temperatures alike, which should significantly extend the service life of these reels.

How to Fish It

• The 100 size is suited to light and medium predator fishing for perch and zander, and pike fishing with lighter lures - casting weights from around 7 g up to roughly 50 g.
• The 250 size covers heavier zander fishing and medium-weight pike work, with casting weights between 12 g and 100 g.
