Custom Out of the Box

Avail is a Japanese manufacturer of tuning parts for Shimano and Daiwa baitcasters, and Tailwalk has worked with this well-known specialist to release a factory-custom version of the Fullrange baitcaster: the Tailwalk Fullrange Avail Custom. The spool and braking system have both been modified to create a baitcaster that handles small, light lures for perch and trout fishing - and light saltwater applications - with real precision. At the heart of the build is a very lightweight Avail Microcast spool that, including its bearings, tips the scales at just 7.9 g. It has outstanding start-up behaviour, even with tiny plugs and other small, light lures. Even a short, compact casting stroke is enough to get the spool spinning - and once it's running, it runs. To keep those casts clean and tangle-free, the reel is fitted with a spiral magnet braking system. The neodymium magnets sit on a rail and can be repositioned; up to 4 magnets can be removed entirely. This gives you extremely fine adjustment and delivers exceptional casting precision, especially at close to mid range.

Performance Through and Through

The Tailwalk Fullrange Avail Custom LH has a compact, slim and low-profile design. The frame is aluminium and the side plate is carbon, a combination that keeps the weight extremely low while still providing high rigidity and torsional stiffness. The side plate opens automatically once released, giving you instant access to the magnet braking system. The other key brake is the star drag, which uses carbon drag washers and delivers a maximum drag force of 6.5 kg. For such a lightweight reel this is a very strong drag, more than capable of handling large fish - and it does so with power while remaining smooth and consistent. The reel is driven by an 80 mm carbon handle with EVA knobs that sit comfortably in the hand in any weather. This is a reel that delivers performance at every level.

2 Models to Choose From

The Tailwalk Fullrange Avail Custom LH is available in 2 models. The first is the 81L/AC-F8, the second the 81L/AC-F12. The 81 refers to the gear ratio of 8.1:1 and the L stands for LH - both models are therefore left-hand wind, typically used by right-handed anglers. AC stands for Avail Custom, as this is the tuned special edition born from the collaboration between Tailwalk and Avail. F8 and F12 refer to the fluorocarbon breaking strain for which the spool capacities are specified in the original Japanese product data. The F8 model has a spool capacity of 60 m of fluorocarbon at 8 lb breaking strain, while the F12 model holds 60 m at 12 lb breaking strain. In diameter terms, 8 lb equates to approximately 0.25 mm and 12 lb to approximately 0.30 mm. The two models also differ in their optimum casting weight range. The F8 works best with casting weights of 3 - 5 g, making it an excellent match for rods with an L rating. The F12 performs at its best around 10 g and pairs well with rods carrying an ML rating.
