The Shimano SLX DC XT 71 is the flagship model of the SLX series and the one that brings Shimano's i-DC5 Digital Control System into the line-up. It covers everything from small finesse lures right through to mid-sized crankbaits and swimbaits, with a casting weight range of 7-35 g.
The Flagship of the SLX Series
The Shimano SLX DC XT 71 combines the directness of a baitcaster with the versatility and light feel that you'd normally associate with a fixed spool reel - and you really notice that in the casting weight range. At the light end, you can still cast very small lures and fish in a range where it competes with dedicated BFS baitcasters. At the same time, it handles larger lures and harder use just as comfortably, something a BFS reel simply cannot do. That versatility comes in large part from its sophisticated braking system.
i-DC5 and More for Outstanding Casting Performance
The Shimano SLX DC XT 71 is fitted with the i-DC5 Intelligent Digital Control braking system. This digital braking system automatically adjusts braking force during the cast after a manual pre-set, optimising both distance and accuracy while reducing the risk of a bird's nest. The system has 2 dials. The first is an internal dial for line type - you set it according to whether the reel is loaded with mono, fluorocarbon, or braid. The second is an external dial with 4 semi-automatic settings that you match to lure size. There is also a W-marked function that lets you cast comfortably in windy conditions. No battery is required, as the system draws its power from the rotation of the spool.
Several additional technologies contribute to the outstanding casting performance. The extremely lightweight MGL III spool runs exceptionally smoothly and freely, particularly when combined with braid. The S3D Design reduces vibration during the cast, benefiting both distance and overall performance. The Level Wind System ensures very even line lay, which in turn has a positive effect on casting performance as well.
Further Technical Refinements
Beyond the cast-specific features, the Shimano SLX DC XT 71 has plenty more going for it. The reel is built around a light but extremely strong Hagane body, flanked on the sides by ultralight Ci4+ side plates. This construction combines low weight with great rigidity, protecting the precision internals from flex and impact so they can perform consistently. Inside, the MicroModule and X-Ship gearing deliver outstanding smoothness and a remarkably light retrieve feel. All told, the Shimano SLX DC XT 71 is a baitcaster that is genuinely enjoyable to use and highly versatile - well suited to virtually all light to medium-heavy lure fishing methods for predators.
Please note: Model 70 is a right-hand retrieve with the handle on the right; model 71 is a left-hand retrieve with the handle on the left.

Positively surprised Just in advance I am a BC beginner It is therefore my first baitcaster with a DC system. I was able to test them on the water for 2-3 hours after receipt and was immediately positively surprised the ejection goes after a short adjustment (PE mode) and coil brake penalty to magnetic brake system on W was my first setting was thrown a 7cm rubber with 7.5g jig head, weather was a slight east wind at 11 km/h. The first throw was estimated at 15-17 meters, then I went down step by step with the magnetic brake and felt most comfortable at 2 where 20-23 meters was no problem, no wig to date. Overall, I certainly have to test a few more things as far as the coil brake is concerned, I will make up for it in the next few days.

Very good baitcaster, I'm absolutely thrilled. The casting characteristics are excellent, I threw smaller swimbaits, chatterbaits and finesse baits during test fishing. The DC system settings are super easy and quick to adjust to different baits. In drill, the brake works very well. Clear recommendation from my side.

Perfect To be honest, it wasn't easy for me to buy 299€ for a BC roll and that for a beginner! But after the first few days on the water, I'm fascinated by the role! Throws with 10g heads and throwing distances of up to 25-30m, amazing! All this without a single wig formation when the brakes have been adjusted correctly! There was also the Bullseye Skip Wip Cast 198 5-28g. Really cool combo, look as well as technical. Absolute purchase error! PS: As I said, give yourself a jerk and save up for the roll, which is inexpensive or cheap, you always buy twice!

Top baitcaster! For me, the role was the start of baitcasting fishing and I am absolutely thrilled. It can be thrown with 7-10g hardbaits as well as small gummies on 7g Chebu. And all of this even against the wind. Clear purchase recommendation from me!

The roll is very well made and fits very well in the hand. The performance in terms of throwing behavior and operation is also excellent and reliable. For me, this is one of the best rolls available, especially in this price segment.
