Savage Gear Mutant Rat SS

The Rat with a Hard Head

The Savage Gear Mutant Rat SS is a large hybrid lure built squarely around pike fishing. It combines a hard rat-profile head with a generous polyester collar and a soft Mutant Rat Trailer - a pairing loaded with considered details that generate action and visual triggers at every stage of the retrieve.

One Head, Many Details

The head of the Savage Gear Mutant Rat SS is based on a 3D scan and looks the part straight out of the box. Beyond the looks, though, it carries several features that have a direct impact on how well it catches. Water flows in through the large open mouth and hits the wide polyester collar, which pulses with every push, putting intense visual movement into the water. A polycarbonate rattle built into the head adds sound to the mix - another trigger for pike. There is also a chin eye for clip-on weights, which lets you fish the Mutant Rat SS deeper and takes it beyond purely shallow-water work.

Relentless Action from the Mutant Rat Trailer

The Savage Gear Mutant Rat SS comes fitted with a Mutant Rat Trailer. This is based on the Mutant Rat Soft LB and shares its body design: large, super-flexible ribs, oversized frog legs and gecko-inspired ball-tipped fingers. These limbs start working at the slowest possible retrieve speed and deliver intense, constant movement. Something is always in motion, keeping pike exposed to a continuous stream of stimulus that ultimately triggers the take.

Robust Hook System with Sharp SGY Trebles

The Savage Gear Mutant Rat SS comes ready-rigged with a robust hook arrangement. A fixed swivel at the head carries a stainless steel stinger fitted with 2 treble hooks - specifically SGY 1X BN trebles, which have proved themselves on a wide range of Savage Gear lures.

From Shallow to Deep

Straight out of the packet, the Savage Gear Mutant Rat SS is a lure designed for shallow water and shallow-water features. It sinks slowly, making it ideal for working steadily past structures and ambush spots such as weed beds, overhanging bushes and jetties. When you want to reach deeper spots, the chin eye for clip-on weights gives you that option. For the retrieve, you will generally get the best out of the Mutant Rat SS by working it with jerks and pauses, giving it room to show its full action and high catch rate on pike.
