Berkley Powerbait Nessie

A Soft Glidebait That Means Business

With the Powerbait Nessie, Berkley presents one of the world's first soft glidebaits - and it sets itself apart from the plastic competition in a meaningful way. The Powerbait soft plastic compound gives the lure a highly natural swimming action that folds easily when a predator takes it, keeping it in the fish's mouth long enough for a clean strike. The tried-and-tested Powerbait scent formula adds another layer of attraction. Primary targets are largemouth bass and pike, though the smaller size will regularly draw strikes from big perch and zander too. Like many quality glidebaits, the Nessie features a bristle tail fin that complements the natural body design and is firmly set into the soft plastic. Its comparatively low weight also makes it ideal for skipping and allows precise presentation around structure. The Berkley Powerbait Nessie is available in a range of sizes and colours to suit any situation on the water.

Plastic Fins for Stability

The Berkley Powerbait Nessie does incorporate some hard plastic, and that is intentional. The fins are constructed from hard plastic and serve primarily to stabilise the lure, ensuring it holds a horizontal attitude in the water even at faster retrieves. They also support the lure's natural swimming movement. A mesh insert forms the joint and contributes further to the smooth, fluid action of the soft glidebait. The retrieve is straightforward but can be varied considerably. At a slow, steady pace the lure produces a wide S-curve, which tightens progressively as you increase speed, so everything from an ultra-slow crawl to a rapid retrieve is possible with the same lure. The occasional pause works wonders, and the takes that follow are something else. You can also work the rod with light twitches to create erratic, unpredictable movement that triggers aggressive strikes from predators.

An Innovative Hook Clip and Oversized Eyes

The tackle team behind the Berkley Powerbait Nessie fitted an innovative hook clip on the belly that holds the sharp Fusion19 treble hook tight against the body. On the 22 cm variant, 2 treble hooks are fitted as standard. There is also a belly pocket into which the hook can be tucked, making it possible to present the Nessie tight to structure without the treble snagging. On the take, the hook is released immediately so you can get straight into the fight. The oversized eyes are not just a nod to the lure's legendary namesake - they serve a functional purpose as an excellent strike trigger for largemouth bass and pike. To fine-tune the weighting, Berkley has marked three positions - beneath the head, on the belly and in the tail section - that are designed to accept nail sinkers. This lets you adapt quickly to where the predators are holding and adjust the running depth on the spot.
