The Oneten is arguably Megabass's most iconic hard lure, and it comes in a wide range of variants.
The Megabass Oneten R+1 was born from a collaboration between Megabass founder Yuki Ito and jerkbait specialist Shinji Sato. Their goal was to refine the already legendary Oneten further and fine-tune its action to fool even the most cautious largemouth bass in Lake Biwa. The challenge was to make the steady retrieve action feel more natural, while preserving the outstanding darting action during twitching and jerking. The result was the Megabass Oneten R, which delivers a subtler, tighter rolling action on the retrieve. During twitching and jerking, it retains that darting action with pauses in which the tail rises and the lure slowly floats upward - provoking even suspicious, following predators into committing. Another key difference is the switch from two tungsten balls to one in the Moving Balancer System. By slightly widening the rear section of the Oneten R, this single ball can now travel significantly further through the body. The result is an improved flight path and greater casting distance - you'll struggle to find a jerkbait of comparable dimensions that matches this casting performance.
The '+1' in the name signals that the Oneten R+1 is a deeper-running variant. The maximum running depth increases by 0.5 m from 1.7 m on the Oneten R to 2.2 m on the Oneten R+1. That difference might seem modest at first glance, but in practice it matters considerably. The +1 variant has established itself particularly for targeting big perch during the cold season, and it is used very effectively on a wide range of waters. It lets you reach the area just beyond the first drop-off, and for a tempting mouthful like this, fish will readily rise 2 or 3 m in the water column. Perch are not the only target, either - zander and pike are caught on this hard lure very regularly as well. In European waters it is fished almost exclusively by twitching and jerking, with the customary pauses in between. A look at Japanese anglers, however, shows that this style of lure is also retrieved steadily with great results. Worth trying when fish are not responding to a twitched presentation.
